FAQ

Wooden surfboards

  • The weight depends on the shape, size, and construction. On very light performance shortboards, foam still has the advantage. But on alternative shapes, fishes, midlengths, and longboards, the difference is much smaller. Some of our wooden longboards can even be lighter than classic foam logs or noseriders.

Our goal is not to make the lightest board possible at any cost. It is to build a board that feels good in the water, lasts well, and keeps a strong balance between performance, durability, and materials.

  • We prioritize eco-friendly materials like sustainably sourced wood, cork, partially bio-sourced resins and natural oils. Our process minimizes waste, reduces synthetic resins, and focuses on longevity, creating boards that last much longer than traditional foam models.

Beyond materials, we also believe sustainability is about the way we work. During our workshops, we encourage a collaborative spirit, participants help each other, share tips, and enjoy the process together. Shaping a board becomes a collective experience rather than a solitary task, which adds meaning and connection to the final product.

  • Wooden surfboards take much more time to craft, use high-quality sustainable materials, and are built to last far longer than regular foam boards. Each one is made by hand, with care and precision. Nothing is mass-produced. What you're investing in is not just a surfboard, but a unique, durable, and consciously made piece that carries real craftsmanship.

In a workshop, the value goes even further. You do not simply receive a board at the end. You learn how it is made, understand the structure, use the tools, and take home knowledge that allows you to keep exploring or even building boards by yourself.

Workshops

  • Glassing is the final lamination process that makes the board watertight, strong, and ready to surf.

After the workshop, the wooden board still needs to be sealed, laminated with fiberglass and epoxy, sanded, and finished properly. This requires space, time, and curing, so we handle it professionally after the workshop.

Professional glassing is included in the workshop price.

  • Most workshops take place at our atelier near Ericeira, Portugal, between Ericeira and Torres Vedras.

We also organise occasional workshops in other locations in Europe. For those, the exact address and practical details are shown on the specific workshop booking page.

  • No.

The workshop is made for people with no previous woodworking experience. We guide you step by step through the full process. You only need to be curious, careful, and ready to work with your hands.

  • Each day follows a structured process, from shaping and sanding to assembly and finishing. We will guide you through every stage, ensuring that you progress efficiently while enjoying a hands-on experience.

For more information check our workshop page →

  • The workshop runs from 13:00 to 18:00 on the first day, and from 09:00 to 18:00 on the following two days, with a lunch break in between. However, the finishing time may vary depending on the number of participants and the progress of each board.

  • To make sure everyone gets personal guidance and enough time to work on their board, our workshops are limited to a maximum of 6 surfboards being built at the same time.

Participants can choose to work individually or share the process with a friend. If you’d like to book a private group session or a team-building event, we may be able to arrange a specific date for you.

  • For workshops in Portugal, your board is usually ready around 5 days after the workshop.

You can pick it up at the atelier, or we can arrange shipping within the EU.

For workshops outside Portugal, glassing is done by a trusted local professional. Timing depends on the location and the glasser’s schedule. The expected timing is explained on the specific workshop booking page.

  • We recommend wearing comfortable work clothes and closed-toe shoes. We provide all the tools and materials, but if you have specific preferences for protective gear (e.g., gloves, mask), feel free to bring your own. We do suggest bringing a dust mask of your choice (an FFP2 mask is perfectly suitable).

  • Food is not included, but we provide plenty of snacks, fruits, drinks, coffee, and tea throughout the day. The workshop is quite isolated, with no restaurants or shops nearby, so we recommend bringing your own picnic. We also have a basic kitchen equipped with a fridge, allowing you to store your food and prepare simple meals on-site.

  • We can recommend local accommodations, great food spots, and some of the best surf breaks around Ericeira.

Logistics

  • The workshop is quite isolated, about a 20-minute drive from Ericeira. If you're coming from abroad, especially outside the high season, we highly recommend having/renting a car, as off-season deals can be very attractive.

From Lisbon → Ericeira is accessible by bus (Nº2801 / Nº2740) from Campo Pequeno P22 (Metro) to Ericeira Center (Bus Terminal) / 50 minutes.

From Ericeira → You can take an Uber (20 minutes) but please note that the workshop is located at the top of a hill with an unpaved road and not all drivers accept the ride. You can also walk up or arrange for us to pick you up at the bottom of the road. Let us know in advance, and we’ll help you find the best solution.

  • For workshops in Portugal, your board is usually ready for pickup around 5 working days after the workshop. If you cannot stay nearby, we can arrange shipping within the EU.

For workshops outside Portugal, glassing and finishing are handled by a trusted local professional. Timing depends on the location and the glasser’s schedule, and is confirmed on the specific workshop booking page.

  • We don’t offer overnight stays at the atelier, and visits during the glassing process after the workshop are not possible. However, if you're interested in learning more, we’ll be happy to share online glassing tutorials specifically for wooden surfboards.

Testing & Warranty

  • At the moment, we don’t offer test boards. Since each board is custom-built and not part of a rental stock, we prefer to keep them in the best possible condition.

That said, if you have questions or need help choosing the right shape, we’re happy to guide you through the decision process. Just reach out, we’ll help you find the board that fits you best.

  • Our boards come with a 3-month warranty against material and manufacturing defects.

The warranty does not cover normal wear, accidental damage, misuse, transport damage, impact, or modifications made after receiving the board.

Payment & Refund

  • Online payments are processed securely through Shopify Payments and PayPal. We accept credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.
